Summertime

I have a thing for hollyhocks.  They were in my Grandfather's garden, so they're sentimental to me, doubly so because I can't seem to get them to look good in my garden.  So every time I see them in stamps or dies, I jump; at least I can make them grow on a card!  Here's this year's version using my hollyhock dies - oh, if I had a garden that looked like this!

supplies: white card stock, watercolor paper for hollyhocks, MFT Tiny Checks and Lawn Fawn Watercolor Wishes design papers, Impression Obsession Hollyhock dies, Spectrum Aqua markers and water, PTI fence and clouds, (probably retired by now), sentiment from Tim Holtz Ideaology Small Talk, Martha Stewart butterfly punch

I first cut and watercolored my flowers, and then gave some thought to my background.  I considered a watercolor wash, but you know me and my gingham.......What's prettier than a picket fence around a garden, so that divided my "sky" and ground.  I couldn't find a sentiment that would work, so I turned to my Small Talk stickers, and they were the perfect solution.

Watch out, I may not be done - I have some hollyhock stamps that I haven't inked up in awhile.........

  1. Oh, I love hollyhocks too. I have fond memories of them from my Chicago childhood, but they don't grow here in Florida (along with a lot of my other favorites). I guess it's compensation that I have orchids outside all year round, and a lot of other tropical plants that don't grow in the Midwest.

And your card is simply beautiful and put a smile on my face!!!

  2. the gingham sky is perfect just such a cute fun card - if you had used any Hero Arts product it would have been perfect for the ABNH challenge which is summertime.

  5. What beautiful Hollyhocks - I have only grown them once, and they got infested with scale insects, so I much prefer your style - they are beautiful Lin. (And a lot less work)

  6. This is perfection! Love the gingham sky, the hollyhocks just pop against it. And I love that some of the flowers are behind the fence as well. Thanks so much for sharing!

  7. Perfect card for a perfect summer day. I LOVE hollyhocks and have fond memories of making little hollyhock ladies in beautiful gowns with them (the gown being the actual flower blossom). They won't grow here in GA, nor will lilacs which I loved and peonies. Your card makes me sweetly nostalgic
