Butterfly Time.and Some Wildflower Shares!

I wanted to make another card with this old favorite Hero Arts woodblock stamp called Heart Winged Butterfly, ca 2009.  I made this design a few times before, and I like the butterfly stamped over a small ditzy floral pattern.   Today's card is in honor of those pretty blue swallowtail butterfles.

The butterfly is stamped twice, fussy-cut, then stacked, securing them only along the body, which allows the wings to be bent upward.  Then I use the same floral print as my card edging.

My husband and I have been trying to walk everyday at a county park very close to us that used to be a 36 hole golf course.  When the owners retired, their kids decided to donate most of it to the park systems here, and over the years, the parks have sprinkled wild flowers everywhere.  Not a day goes by that we don't discover something new.  I take my phone with me, and if I don't know what the plant is, there's an identifier on the phone that usually does a pretty good job of telling me what it is.

Here are some flowers we've seen so far this year.

Dame's Rocket

This is a little lupine!  I was thrilled to find patches of these; I didn't know we had these in Ohio!  They're about 6 to 8 inches tall.

Spiderwort

A tree swallow.  These birdhouses have been placed all over the property and, though we've seen a few bluebirds, this is what we see most often.  Look at that gorgeous irridescent blue!

According to my identifier, these are foxglove beardtongue.  There are great swaths of these in several areas.  

Just in the last few weeks, coneflower, butterfly weed and milkweed have been opening.

The bees were all over these today and they smell wonderful!  AND we've seen several deer now and again.  No fawns yet, though. 

Right now the park has 3 trails, some using the old cart paths from the golf course in places, augmented with mown grass paths and gravel ones, and sprinkled with woods, all going up hill and down dale!  We are SO lucky to have this!  You'll be seeing more pics going forward.

A CASE

Back in 2014 I took one of Jennifer McGuires's online card classes called Stretch Your Stamps 2, and Shari Carroll was one of the instructors.  I CASEd one of Shari's cards then and have always wanted to do another one in a different set of colors.  Here's that card, only 12 years later!

Here's my original card.

Both cards use the same cling stamp called Flower Bird Garden, a 3" by 3 1/2" negative background.  Inking it allows the details to come through as white (or whatever color of cardstock you use to stamp on), and colors the background.  Shari's idea was to ink it in several distress inks, spray it lightly with water to help the inks blend, and then stamp it on watercolor paper.  Then you cut it into 1" squares and mix them back up to make a more random background.  In order to get enough squares, I had to stamp twice, and after cutting them apart into 1" squares, randomly popped them above a backing panel, which was then attached to my white card base.  Then I just added a die-cut sentiment and embellishments.

Woodblock Wednesday!

It's time for Amy's Woodblock Wednesday and I made 2 cards this month!  First, since February is the month of hearts, I decided to use this little woodblock stamp.  It's unmarked except for a sticker that says "Anita's @2002 Sugarloaf, Lithonia, GA  made in China".  I also used a Hero Arts Simple Frame from 2010.

My next card uses a Hero Arts stamp from 2009 called Silhouette Meadow Flowers.  It stamps a negative image which you then color in to see the details.  I clear embossed it over music paper, then blended in some pink and green inks.

The flowers on this stamp looked like roses to me, so I paired them with this lovely embossing folder that features large roses.  Since I used a music background, the sentiment seemed fitting.

Some Masculine Cards

 I have 3 birthday cards to make for February, all of them for men.  So here's a share of 2 of them.  This first one's a CASE of a card that Hannelie made a few years ago - what a gorgeous design!

I'm pleasantly surprised with the new update from Apple that I got back in January.  I took this picture just after our monster snowstorm and the skylight in the room I always take pictures in was completely snow covered, and thus much darker in there than usual, but the photos were amazingly bright without any tweaking!

Woodblock Wednesday!

I was cleaning for Christmas, dusting the shelves that hold my woodblocks, and found this in the process.  I decided to use it for my card for the first Woodblock Wednesday of 2026.   It's a quilt stamp from PSX from 1994, labeled only with a product number, K-1305.

This would be a sampler quilt, made for a special occasion, like a wedding, or to showcase many different blocks at one time.

Hero Studio for December: Soup There It Is

This will be my last post as an influencer for Hero Arts.  It was such a thrill to come full circle with them, as their Flickr group were the ones to teach me and encourage me to start a blog way back in the early 2000s.  Many thanks to Kelly for this final honor! 

It's time for a new month of  Hero Arts Studio Kits!  This month our theme is Soup There it Is.  The kits are available now for subscription, through the 27th.  Be sure to read all the way down my post to the end, where I quote some changes coming in 2026 to the Subscription Program.

My first card shows you the layering stencils, Pop Art Cans.

The first thing I thought when I saw this stencil set was Andy Warhol, so I did a google search and settled on this piece of art.  I used these same colors for my card.

So I used the main colors here, hot pink, turquoise, and bright yellow.  Each of the first 3 stencils were done in 1 of these colors, and then I used a white pigment ink for my 4th layer.  It was interesting to see the colors that resulted when layering the 3 colors.  I really liked the dots on the original art, so I followed suit, using an old swiss dot embossing folder after my stencilling was complete.   The sentiment is from the Card Kit set this month.

The Card Kit this month consists of a large stamp set and matching dies, called You're Super, plus another set of dies called Big Squishy Hugs.  Here's the stamp/die combo card I made.

The stamp set has 2 sizes of soup pots, the vegies and accessories you see here, and a total of 9 different sentiments.  And there are dies for everything in the matching die set.  Sick or not, I love home-made soups, so this was fun to put together.

This die set contains dies to make the card front in 2 halves, dies to detail the arms, and a large heart to tuck in between them.  I used another of the sentiments from the stamp set from this month, along with matching dies.  In essence, you make 2 slightly different halves for your card front, and then nest them together.  I left my arms loose so that I could tuck in the heart.  Quite a clever design!

Hero Studio for November: One More Chapter

It's time for a new month of  Hero Arts Studio Kits!  This month our theme is One More Chapter; all about books!  The kits are available now for subscription, through the 27th.

I've been a reader all my life, so I think this is a great theme!

My first card uses the Stencil Kit, called On the Shelf.  The 4 stencils make a little library!

I used 3 colors of ink 1 for each of the first 3 stencil layers, then Gold Hero Wax for the 4th layer.  This was my first time using the wax, and I was pleasantly surprised how creamy and easy to spread it was.  I threw my stencil and tools into a bin of water when I was finished, and it cleaned up easily, too!

I added one of the many sentiments and matching dies from the Card Kit, popped up with some adhesive strips.  

Next are the Fancy Dies: Book Bag.

Isn't this one cute? Love that bookworm that's included!  Because there are little flowers here and there, I used an old retired embossing folder with little flowers, too.

The Card Kit has 3 die sets and 2 coordinating stamp sets, plus cardstock and that wax I used on my first card.

My card features one of the Card Kit die sets called To Be Read Pile.  It has a stamp set to match.  This one was really easy and fun to put together!

This die set consists of 1 large die that forms the stack, and 8 smaller dies, 1 for each of the books.  Then I used the matching stamps and various embossing powders to put a design on the spine of each book.  How clever!  The stamps also include ones with sentiments on them, but I kept only to the patterned ones, and finished my card with yet another of the Professional Bookworm sentiment stamps in the Kit.

Woodblock Wednesday!

It's time for Woodblock Wednesday!  October means pumpkins, so I pulled out these Hero Arts 2009 stamps and paper-pieced them this time.

October Hero Studio - Merry Era

The Hero Arts Studio Kits for October are now available through the 27th of this month.  The overall theme this month is Merry Era.

I always play with the stencils first.  This month they are called The Tree.

As always, the stencils are 4 pieces, 3 for the tree and 1 for the baubles.  I added some dewdrops over some of the pink areas amidst the branches, for a little sparkle and dimension, and popped up the sentiment for the same reason.  I trimmed the A2 panel just a tad so that I could mat it with dark teal.

Next up are the Fancy Dies, Twinkle Lights.

This is a set of 5 strings of Christmas lights, and dies to cut out the lights themselves.  The sentiment was the one that I thought worked the best from the Card Kit.  I used gold metallic cardstock for the strings and 4 different glitter cardstocks for the lights.

The Card Kit contains a set of dies to make this big disco ball.  It will fit onto an A2 card, but I chose to make a Christmas Ornament out of it.  It is 4 1/4" in diameter, and has a separate die to make a hook so that you can add a thread to hang it by.

The stamp set and dies to match are all about disco balls, so I stamped and embossed with silver against a teal background, then stamped the sentiment and Santa hat in red, adding a bit of glitter on the hat for some more glitz, and popped them up.  The card front is matted in metallic silver.

September Hero Studio: Fall in the Forest

 The Hero Arts Studio kits  for September have been released; I'm so excited for this month's theme of Fall in the Forest!!  Working on these cards made me feel cooler already!

The Layering Stencils, called Fairyland Forest, called my name first.

There are 4 pieces in the stencil set, 3 for the various trees, and the final one for the tree trunks.  I used 10 different colors of distress inks.  The sentiment from the Studio Card Kit is perfect, so I lifted it above the front and added a bit of interest with the hemstitch oval die, which simply cuts out an oval shape to let the backing show through. 

Next up are the Fancy Dies, Cozy Critters.

Isn't this set darling?  It also includes a large fox that can be made a couple of ways, and a little duck!  I went searching in my scraps for a quilt-like patterned paper, then used the quilt die to cut it out and add some subtle stitched details.  I used a tiny green check for my pillow, and a brass foil cardstock for my headboard.  I popped up the noses of the critters for some dimension, and my sentiment is an old retired one from The Craft's Meow.

Finally, here are my cards using this month's Card Kit: Fall in the Forest.  This month we get a stamp set with dies to match everything but the sentiments, and a separate die set that makes a large tree!

There's a separate oval die to cut out the hole in the tree for Mr. Squirrel to store his acorns; also a heart and 2 sentiment dies in that set.  The stamp set has 5 different squirrels, 4 pumpkins, lots of different leaves, a rake, a tree stump, and 4 sentiments; everything you'll need t make your own little scene!

My last card features most of the pumpkins, more leaves, and a sentiment from the stamp set, and lots of patterned papers.

Over the years I've collected lots of 6" square paper pads, and these patterns are from them.  I particularly love the text background which has a fall theme, too.  Since there is some twine and a packet of enamel dots in the kit, I added them to the mix also.

August Hero Studio - Ichabod's Study!

The Hero Studio kits for August have been released - Ichabod's Study is the theme, all about Halloween!

My first card mixes elements from the Card Kit, Ichabod's Study, with the Layering Stencils, Sunnyside Manor, for this month.

The stamps include a male and a female image with lots of layers, plus some pumpkins, this spiderweb and bat, 6 sentiments, plus lots I haven't used.  Then there are 2 die sets included, 1 to cut out the sentiments, both figures, and some of the elements, and another which has 3 frames to be layered or used alone, 3 sizes of little butterflies, and these glasses.  There's also a stamping guide included to help stamp the portraits, and some rainbow film, acetate, and a light to make the portrait appear and disappear in the frame! (not used here)  Michelle showed off this idea beautifully in her post HERE.

The layering stencils are 4 parts, so I used my go-to Halloween colors to make the wallpaper.

 I saw a card recently made by LaVon on Instagram, that checked all my boxes, and immediately pinned it.

Inspired by a Kleenex Box?

 As I was changing out an empty box of tissues, I noticed the colors on the empty one and decided to snip out one of the sides to use for inspiration.  These are colors I certainly would never have come up with on my own!

The backing is a very dark green, and I liked the golds, oranges, and a bit of pale pink that were in the mix.  After thinking about what set of dies I could use, I settled on a favorite set from Spellbinders: Club Blooms; it has lots and lots of flowers and leaves.   Here's what I came up with.
